If you don’t follow Twitter, you may miss some of the work the Charlotte 49er Football program is doing to excite the community and fans. This week there have been two football camps for two different groups of people that are introducing the program to different audiences. They are not college students, nor do you often see them on a college football field.
Throughout the week, Coach Lambert hosted the Little Niners Football camp for kids ages 7 to 13, while this Saturday, the program hosted the First Annual Charlotte Football Women’s Clinic.
Apart from exposing two different audiences to the program and sport, coaches and players have been tweeting pictures of the events all week. Creating social media buzz has helped push the program during this summer. Here are a few images tweeted by outside linebacker coach Napoleon Sykes and offensive line coach Phil Ratliff from both events.

According to Coach Sykes, 35 women attended the clinic this year, but he encouraged more to attend next year.

The Brad Lamber Football Camps are not over. There are two more sessions for older high-school age prospects in the coming weeks.

Here are several of the press releases/news stories and video links for today’s press conference.
On a side note, I had the opportunity to talk to Carroll York, the C.C.U.N.C Owls football player recently featured in Episode 10 of 49er Football Now. Mr. York talked about the how he was sitting in a barber’s chair when he overheard someone talking about the current football team. He mentioned that he had played for the Owls in the 1940s, and the person, surprised at first, directed him to the athletic department.
Talking about the team, Mr. York said that the team practiced at 4:00 in the afternoon before classes started, and that he believed that they used Central High School’s uniforms. He said that the team often interacted with the Central High School football players. After leaving C.C.U.N.C, York went on to Clemson University where he graduated with an engineering degree.
He mentioned that he had yet to see the episode of 49er Football Now, but he did carry around a folder with pictures from University Archives. Tom Whitestone also has an entry on The Final 49 about Mr. York.

By the fall of 1949 C.C.U.N.C had become Charlotte College, an independent junior college in the heart of the city. Instead of being a part of the UNC Extension system, Charlotte College was under the direction of the Board of Education of the City of Charlotte. With these changes also came the end of an era. The first publication of Collegiate Life, a newsletter to for the students and faculty of the new college also informed students that there was not enough support for football. According to the notice, only 15 students attended the first practice, and that the season would be cancelled due to the lack of attendance and support.

In 1949 Charlotte College also joined the Carolinas Junior College Athletics Conference, and though CC did not have a football team, one team that was part of the conference that CC would have played was Campbell College. Campbell College had won the JCCAC conference title in 1948, though they stopped fielding a team only a year later. Regardless, UNC Charlotte will return to football when they play against Campbell University in August of 2013. Both schools have gone through the process of recently adding a team despite having one in the early 20th Century.
